LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Festive race to include world-class competitors

The various Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon events across the country have a reputation for creating a festive atmosphere, an almost running party of sorts.

But race spokesman Dan Cruz said the first edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon also will feature some serious competition, with a number of elite runners in both the marathon and half-marathon.

“This is gonna be a world-class marathon and a big-time race,” Cruz said of Sunday’s event, which has a 6 a.m. start time at Mandalay Bay and will take over a huge chunk of the Strip and Las Vegas Boulevard for several hours. “This isn’t just a fun run. Some of the fastest athletes on the planet will be in front, and there will be a big old party going on behind them.”

The new route for the 2009 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon and half-marathon will shut down the entire Strip.

Ask Brent Ashton if he ever thought he’d be preparing to run in a half-marathon six months ago and he’ll laugh.

“Never,” Ashton said. “I never thought I would even do a marathon. I’ve never run a marathon in my life and this is my first one.”

Ashton, a Henderson native, weighed 310 pounds less than a year ago. But he’s lost 60 pounds since and is now preparing to participate in the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon Sunday.

Ashton will be one of more than 27,000 people who show up at the starting line near Mandalay Bay at 6:00 Sunday morning for the event. When he crosses the finish line 13.1 miles later, Ashton’s goal will be complete.

Even vaunted director Kenny Ortega could not have choreographed a more compelling spectacle. Set for 3 p.m. Saturday at The Pearl Concert Theater in the Palms is a tribute to Michael Jackson, a benefit show marking what would have been the King of Pop’s 51st birthday had he not died on June 25 of what the Los Angeles County coroner announced today was acute intoxication from the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives.

In the face of that grave disclosure, and as a series of Vegas-connected developments in the Jackson investigation has surfaced since his death was announced, a variety show has been organized to benefit arts and music programs for Vegas Valley kids through the Clark County Public Education Foundation.
