48 hours in Vegas

This is a city impossible not to love – so long as you play your cards right. CONOR POPE pays a whistlestop visit to the place Hunter S Thompson called ‘the meanest town on Earth’

IT’S 7AM and things are getting messy. “It’s Vegas baby, Vegas!” my somewhat flushed companion bellows to no-one in particular. He’s ordering another round of cocktails off the bemused waiter working the breakfast shift at the Casino Bar in the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the southern end of the most famous Strip in the world.

We’ve been in this black and chrome bar for eight blurry hours, but the hangovers and the horrors are still some ways off. After flying more than 6,000 miles to spend 48 hours in the world’s wildest party town, going to bed at this early stage of the, er, evening, seems like surrender, so I nod, reach for the frozen margarita and hope I don’t marry a hooker or wake up with a tiger in my bathroom.

Rock ‘n’ Las Vegas Roll Marathon – Event not ‘just a fun run,’ says spokesman

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Festive race to include world-class competitors

The various Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon events across the country have a reputation for creating a festive atmosphere, an almost running party of sorts.

But race spokesman Dan Cruz said the first edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon also will feature some serious competition, with a number of elite runners in both the marathon and half-marathon.

“This is gonna be a world-class marathon and a big-time race,” Cruz said of Sunday’s event, which has a 6 a.m. start time at Mandalay Bay and will take over a huge chunk of the Strip and Las Vegas Boulevard for several hours. “This isn’t just a fun run. Some of the fastest athletes on the planet will be in front, and there will be a big old party going on behind them.”

Promoters: ‘Battle of East and West’ sold out in Las Vegas

MANILA, Philippines – With just a little over a week remaining, the live gate for the May 3 megafight between Filipino star Manny Pacquiao and British slugger Ricky Hatton has sold out, promoters announced today.

Nevertheless, those who weren’t able to get tickets to watch the fight live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas can still catch the action via closed-circuit viewing at Mandalay Bay, Mirage, TI, Monte Carlo, Circus Circus, Luxor and New York-New York.

Tickets for the closed-circuit telecast are pegged at $50, excluding handling fees.

With this development, Bob Arum of Top Rank said the Pacquiao-Hatton fight will likely shatter existing pay-per-view records.

“Given that the live gate for this event is sold out, coupled with the sellout of tonight’s San Francisco Giants baseball game where Manny is the guest of honor, indicates to me that ‘The Battle of East and West’ is on track to break all existing pay-per-view records,” Arum said in a statement.

Top Rank is co-promoting the event with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Hatton.

De La Hoya, who recently announced his retirement from boxing, also expressed satisfaction with the high interest generated by the bout.

“We’re extremely pleased with the way fans have reacted to this event and I’m really not surprised that this fight is sold out,” De La Hoya said. “You’ve got two of the best fighters in the world in Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao, as well as two of the most exciting fighters, facing each other in their primes. This is going to be a fight to remember.”

For those who attend Interop this month and think they have some free time, here are 25 quintessentially Vegas things to consider while visiting the city of lights.

1. Pee on the Berlin Wall, sort of. So it’s not on the scale of New York City or Paris, but this attraction is one Vegas casino’s tribute to a bit of German history. A section of the famous Berlin Wall (“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”) has been reassembled in the men’s room at Main Street Station Casino Hotel in downtown Las Vegas. A row of urinals are mounted on the wall.
